38 days

Notes on Mark Making:

I’m writing this after approximately (x) number of visits since 25.08. 2016, to the School of Arts and Aesthetics at JNU. Its been a total of  38 days as today is 03.10.2016.

  1. Mark making has a direct relation with immediate experiences of reading, thinking, pondering and discovering knowledge of Interest.
  2.  Mark making through time based visits reflect how one might be thinking on a particular moment / day.

1. Mark making has a direct relation with immediate experiences of reading, thinking, pondering and discovering knowledge of Interest.

This means that when I read about Ludwig Wittgenstein’s wikipedia page, i drifted from youtube videos on phenomenology, to few quotes written by Ludwig and other Philosophers such as Edmund Husserl. In between i shifted to understand what does ‘Ontology’ mean. It left me thinking of what is logic? what does it mean to communicate ? what is miscommunication? And what is an equation, formula etc. So the next day I responded to such information by making marks which dabbled with such thoughts.

And on another day, I was in a conversation with a fellow artist on things I was not noticing on the Campus like the generic atmosphere around me, the green natural landscape,  the glowing light at night inside the Campus which was a recurring theme on images I was posting on my Instagram account prior to inhabiting the gallery. Prior to Inhabiting the gallery, I was in Goa, and images posted on my Instagram were all drawings In Situ in my sketchbook. But here i was drawing on site on the Walls inside a Gallery Space.

I argued that the position here in the university is different. But the conversation stayed on with me. And two days later I responded by making a series of drawings on the glowing light on light poles inside the campus.

2. Mark making through time based visits reflect how one might be thinking on a particular moment / day.

This means that the marks can be compared from one day to another. I can compare the first day where i drew a sketch called ‘dirty switch’. (last week of August 2016) because i was bothered by how dirty the Campus was. There was no cleaning and it appeared as a place where no one questions basic hygiene facilities such as dirty switchboards, fans, ceilings, absence of soap in toilets to wash hands etc. So i drew a dark stroked electrical switch used to turn on lights as it was really troubling me and I needed to express it.

And if i compare to marks made on October 03, 2016, they were more about searching for the freedom square in the Campus. The search was part of an email exchange which led to marks reflecting upon what freedom meant to me. The freedom square is a place where students have demonstrated in the recent past about State Control over the university.

Conclusion

38 days reflect that each day was different. And each day it was some type of conversation with someone, on something. That what ever surfaced on the wall, was the most important thought, feeling at that moment and the rest drowned, weathered away from me. And in the days to come, whatever i expressed as marks days before was no longer as an attachment in the phase of making new marks. There might be some continuity in them but the past marks did not carry forward some how.

Maybe thats what its all about. That in this way, they don’t have to come together as a whole. That each mark is complete in its relation to the space where it emerged.
